In this 3-hour class, we will learn all about the common pests affecting honeybee colonies and ways we can employ integrated pest management (IPM) techniques to keep honeybee colonies strong and healthy. The varroa mite is by far the biggest threat to honeybee health - aka the enemy of beekeepers - and understanding our enemy is the first step in being able to control it.
Expect a deep dive on the varroa mite’s biology, lifecycle, and reproduction, how it interacts with the natural cycles of the honeybee colony, and the different methods available for monitoring and controlling its presence in the hive. We’ll cover a variety of sustainable, environment- and bee-friendly techniques for controlling mites and preventing the spread of harmful viruses.
Chemical treatments are NOT the first step, and learning best practices to keep your hives strong and healthy may eliminate the need to use them at all. Join us June 9th to equip yourself with all the knowledge you need to make informed, responsible decisions in caring for your bees while supporting a healthy ecosystem!
